Why The Lundon Williams Trophy Is So Important - by Tony Denson
Right, I’m not the greatest with this sort of stuff but after seeing what the other lads have written, I felt that I needed to give it a go. I’m fine talking on Luno’s behalf but writing is a different matter. Anyway, here we go
This tournament was the brain child of Mick Wickham jnr, and when it was first put to me it was supposed to be a load of teams in a big tournament. Sounded like a great idea but we had tried to do a tournament before and it was hard work.
Not long after Michaels initial diagnosis, myself and John Bruns pulled together a 5 a-side tournament and it was a great success. However, we had teams dropping out on the day and not getting enough players, which wasn’t ideal, especially for a 5 a-side. After a few back and fourths, with Si grant and others, the idea of having the 4 teams, 2 semis and a final was settled on. Since that discussion it has just exploded, bigger than any of us could ever imagine. The way the amateur footballers (and a few ex pros) have embraced this tournament is nothing short of amazing. And for a so called charity event, the football has been a joy to watch and the little bit of niggle that still exists makes it even better.
This tournament, in my opinion, is exactly what Michael and Ben would have wanted if they could pick something to honour both of them. And if this tournament was for someone else, they would be massively involved.
The work that goes on behind the scenes to make it such a great day is relentless. Once a tournament finishes, the conversation starts about how to make it even better next year. We can't thank everyone enough for the work that’s put in to make it the success it has and continues to be.
The money raised, massively helps Michael, Vicky, Maya and Ted do things that we all take for granted... days out, trips away... things which are made much more complicated because of Michaels condition.
Finally, on behalf of Michael, Vick and all the family I would just like to say a massive thank you to everyone involved. The people who donate their time from their own busy lives to make this a special day. I know it’s a day Mick loves and looks forward to every year.
Thanks again.
